The LOOP - Kiel, Germany

The guiding principle of the design is the creation of a spatial framework that is context-oriented and allows for a high degree of flexibility and diversity. The design is inclusive on every level and considers the access and view of the Kiel Fjord to be an important spatial component for everyone.

The legacy of the earlier use of the MFG 5 Naval Aviation Squadron is used to define important spatial moments of the new city district, such as the hangar space. In addition to the existing buildings, the area has a number of ecologically valuable natural areas, from the fjord slope and forest with old trees to flat plateaus and the heterogeneous shore.

The promenade as the guiding principle runs through the quarter as a loop, connecting Holtenau with Pries-Friedrichsort and creating an additional identity. The design builds on the topographical qualities and heterogeneous building typologies of the surrounding districts. The concept combines historical, ecological and typological aspects into a coherent structure that allows different forms to coexist within a clear spatial framework. The low-car district is becoming a future-oriented quarter, an urban identity-forming place that assumes its function as a new anchor point within the city of Kiel.

The green identity of the new quarter is not just an aesthetic component, but is formed from specific sustainability strategies. The sustainable component of the concept includes, among other things, avoiding the urban heat island effect, managing/delaying rainwater, greatly reducing car traffic, giving preference to pedestrians, cyclists and collective means of transport over motorized individual traffic. The generation of own resources for heating and electricity is also on the agenda of the district. The green identity is also considered from the point of view of equality between all new residents. Access to the waterfront and public spaces for residents and visitors is of particular importance to enjoy the qualities of life and the city on the water.

Developed in collaboration with IND and LOOP.
